Fremont High School
5 Hours
CCTC Standards 16, 17, 18
- I checked a lot of books in and out today. It looks like a no brainer but the scanner was temperamental, there were barcode glitches, and students argued that "I returned that book already," and "I'm not paying any damn fines." After a while I got a rhythm going. The students thought it was cool that I am a "student," like them. They were very helpful, especially the library habitues.
- I continued "reading" the 921s. What a mess. What was great about the task is that it reveals what sections are heavily used and what sections are virtually untouched. I also found damaged books and others that needed to be weeded.
- Shelving really is helping me get the lay of the land. Almost everytime I shelve a book I am compelled to fix that section.
- The best thing I did today was help two girls who wanted books on "segregation." I taught them how to use OPAC, but more importantly I helped them narrow their topic to educational segregation. We found books on Brown vs. Board of Ed. and the Lemon Grove court case. We found Jonathan Kozol's Shame of the Nation which has a chapter on Fremont! They thought it was so interesting that there were books on the topic in several different places depending on the treatment of the subject and the focus of the book.
